UPDATE: Attorney Charged With Dragging Victim With Car, Fleeing Scene

Police say Daniel McNerney, 49, was arrested in Ramsey after allegedly dragging an unidentified individual with his vehicle; McNerney will be pleading not guilty, his attorney says

A Ridgewood lawyer was arrested Monday for allegedly dragging a person with his car in Ridgewood before fleeing the scene, said.

Daniel McNerney, 49, of Kenwood Road, was charged with aggravated assault, endangering an injured victim, and leaving the scene of an accident, Captain Jacqueline Luthcke said Wednesday. Luthcke characterized the victim's injuries as "serious" but did not offer any further detail.

McNerney, whose practice includes personal injury representation, is the brother of former County Executive Dennis McNerney.

His attorney, Ray Flood, said Thursday he would be pleading not guilty to the charges. Flood declined to discuss the details of the alleged incident but said there would be "total cooperation with law enforcement" in the course of the investigation.

"It's my expectation that when a thorough investigation is done these charges will be dismissed against him," Flood said.

McNerney was arrested without incident at 6 a.m. in Ramsey, Luthcke said.

Police would not provide details about the incident, including where and when it occurred, or the condition of the alleged victim.

A spokeswoman for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office said the matter was being handled by Ridgewood. McNerney waived his first appearance at Ridgewood Municipal Court Thursday. The case is likely to move to Superior Court in Hackensack.

McNerney was appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court's Office on Attorney Ethics to the District IIA Ethics Committee, according to his firm's website. A spokesman for the Office of Attorney Ethics said as of Thursday McNerney's status on the committee has not changed, but the office is "looking into the matter."

He has been a public defender in Hackensack, Paramus, New Milford and Cresskill, and represented a 9/11 survivor, according to the law firm's site.

This report was last updated at 5:57 p.m. Thursday to update that McNerney waived his first appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court on Thursday.

Nonsense! If that were the case, why not drive directly to the Police Station, or call the Police as soon as he was safely away? Oh yes, I am sure he will put up a vigorous defense, after all, he's a lawyer.

How do we know anything even happened if the police are refusing to say what happened, where it happened, who it happened to, and the condition of the victim? What's the secrecy all about?

obviously Daniel McNerney has connections, and perhaps there is something else going on here. why the secrecy??? Harlan is correct; if D. McNerney felt he was in any sort of danger, then go (or call) to the police station.

Actually, Harlan, what is nonsense is trying to draw any conclusions whatsoever based on the information provided. I include myself in that, and was only trying to point out that there are always 2 sides to every story.

Please stay on this story, James. I just have this feeling that "everything will be put right" without any further police or court action.

I agree smells fishy to me.
I don't see the Bergen Record reporting anything.
Pretty big topic if you ask me.
Public figure involved in an accident.

When regular people are hit by cars in Ridgewood it is always reported, even if they walk away from the accident.

Perhaps someone was somewhere they shouldn't have been with someone they shouldn't have been with when this happened.

Amamom, there are certain circumstances under which it would be illegal for the police to release certain details, including where it occurred. I don't believe anyone is trying to hide anything here.

The Record has an update and more detail on this story by Evonne Coutros published Wednesday February 15th. Ridgewood Police Capt. Jacqueline Lutheke provided some details.

Why drag out the details? Wouldn't the police station be a bit more appropriate than Ramsey.
