R'Wood Business Owners Unfazed by Rat Infestation
The village has sent a pest control company to deal with the rodents found along a strip of E. Ridgewood Ave.
Many Ridgewood business owners said they are not worried about—or had not even heard of—a large rat infestation in the southeast corner of the Central Business District.
According to Ridgewood Health Division Supervisor Dawn Cetrulo, 20 rat burrows were found in three areas within Block 3704. The area extends along the east side of E. Ridgewood Ave. between Walnut St. (by Homemade Pizza) and S. Maple Ave (near Renato's), and also encompasses a portion of Dayton Street.
The village was notified by a complaint on Nov. 9 and has since sent a pest control company to treat the three infested areas, Cetrulo told Patch. How many rats are present or how long they've been at Block 3704 is not clear, officials say.
There have been no reports of health issues related to the infestation, according to Cetrulo. An increase in health inspections have been conducted in the affected area since the complaint, she added.
The Health Division head could not identify a specific cause for the rat presence. "Anytime there is a food and water source with a place for harborage, there is the potential of a rat problem," Cetrulo said in an e-mail.
Village Manager Ken Gabbert speculated Wednesday that the unusually high amount of water in recent months could be a factor in the rats marching down E. Ridgewood Ave. of late.
Still, Gabbert said, "We are amazingly relatively free of [rats]" compared to many other downtowns.
Owner of Hillmann Lighting and Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce President Tom Hillmann said he has been aware of periodic rat-sightings caused by trash left out too long. Hillmann said he did not believe the recent sightings were a serious issue.
"Until we have any bears rolling around the business district, I don't see a big problem," Hillmann said.
Chamber Executive Director Joan Groome said the chamber will be sending a warning out to its members. She found it was strange the infestation happened in a part of the business district that does not have many restaurants.
Tito's Burritos, Cupcakes by Carousel, Country Pancake, Homemade Pizza and Renato's Pizza are among the dining establishments within Block 3704.
Several business owners and managers in Block 3704 told Patch Thursday that they were not concerned or had even heard about the infestation. Village officials said they sent out a three-page letter outlining steps to eliminate the rats.
Between pesticides and winter, "Hopefully we'll wipe them all out," Gabbert said.

Why use harmful poisons when you can dress up in tights, play a flute and simplly charm the rats out of the village? Craigslist?

Actually the rat shown in the picture is a "fancy rat," which many people (including my brother) keep as pets, not the standard gray sewer-style rat most people think of. If these are the type of rat that are downtown, somebody released them there. Pet rats are actually very friendly, sociable, intelligent and clean animals. In fact rats spend more than 1/3rd of their life cleaning themselves (find me a human who can say that), but usually avoid people that they don't know, always staying close to walls and structures due to poor eyesight. Not saying I would want wild rats running around in a restaurant kitchen where I was eating, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Eric,
Thank you for your comment. Although the image up now is less exciting (it's not easy to top a rat eating a melon!), the common brown rat is now shown. As you said, the fancy rat is quite different and the rats in the CBD are believed to be sewer rats.
Limabean – Dawn Cetrulo said they have been back since the initial complaint to perform additional inspections.

Have to agree on that one, the rat eating melon was rather cute, but there have been recorded events of "fancy rat infestations," where someone drops off a couple babies somewhere and within a couple years there can be hundreds. In the words of Bob Barker, remember to get your pets spayed or neutered

I thought....if rat feces is found they are classified as unsanitary which should be a public doc...no?

Where is that picture taken? It doesn't look like anywhere in Ridgewood that I know of.

I think it is irresponsible of Patch to name ANY restaurants in an article about rats unless there had been a finding by the health department of rats on their respective premises. If I owned one of the restaurants you name, even "in the area" or "the block", I would demand an apology and a retraction. Not recognizing that "guilt by association" can negatively impact a restaurant's reputation and daily business is irresponsible journalism and certainly not in the best interests of our community.

Health Dept. violation reports should only be posted and authored by a Health Dept. official. Patch reporters should be more careful as to their sources of "NEWS".

Of no! - Rats in Ridgewood! Uptown rats no less! Are these Occupy Ridgewood Rats?
Will they move out of their burrow's and set up tents? Is there an ordinance banning rat tents? Are the rats getting curbside pick up service? There should be an ordinance against rat curbside pick up it is a traffic and safety hazard.
