Incumbent borough school board members Gene Calderon and Barbara Steuert had little trouble fending off competitors on election day. But it was newcomer Liz Carr who cleaned house as the polls closed Tuesday night.

A frequent face at school board meetings over the last decade, the school nurse and mom of two grabbed an unofficial 1,800 votes from borough residents.

"I want to thank everyone who supported me," Carr told Patch after the race. "I am so excited to become a trustee and work with the current Board members. I intend to serve all the residents of Glen Rock while trying to ensure that the quality of education and programs are maintained without increased costs. "

Following Carr, the next highest vote total came from 25-year board veteran Barbara Steuert, who took home 1,447 votes. 

"I would like to thank the voters of Glen Rock for their continued confidence in me and Gene and welcome Liz Carr to the board," Steuert said. "I will work hard to make Glen Rock schools great for all students while keeping costs as low as possible."

Steuert expressed hope that citizens would become more involved with board happenings and reach out to its members.

Fellow incumbent Gene Calderon placed third, taking the final seat with 1,315 votes.

Candidates 18-year-old Sean Massaro and James Chung garnered 960 votes and 940 votes, respectively.

Despite widespread power outages in Glen Rock wrought on by Hurricane Sandy, turnout was heavy in Glen Rock.

According to figures from the county board of election, 67 percentage of voters showed up. Absentee ballots still have not yet been counted.
