Driver of Vehicle That Struck and Killed Six Year Old Identified

Police say a 24-year-old woman was attempting to avoid parked car when she fatally struck Kelly Creegan

More details are beginning to emerge as to how a six-year-old Ridgewood girl died Monday night in a driveway on Overbrook Road.

According to a news release sent by Ridgewood Police Thursday morning, 24-year-old Mirjam Kaiser, of Ridgewood, drove up the driveway of the house next door, crossed the grass to avoid a parked car and struck Creegan, who was playing in front of the parked vehicle.

Creegan was taken to Valley Hospital but pronounced dead before arrival.

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation remains open, police said.

Being that the driveways are only a few inches apart, I think it may have been a common practice to cross over the narrow patch of grass.

The Creegans are preparing to bury their little girl tomorrow, and I'm not sure any of the questions or blame matter much to them right now. I have a daughter the same age as Kelly and I haven't been able to stop thinking about the horror and pain they are experiencing. There are several groups in town, including the HSAs and the Chamber of Commerce, who are taking donations and arranging meals. If you haven't been contacted already, please take a minute to reach out to one of those organizations to lend support in any way you can.

The driveways are adjacent between the two properties and there has been a long-standing agreement (for over 40 years, which can be verified by the neighbor) that the driveways are shared and cars are moved between the two constantly. This was NOT a case of negligence and people should be very, very careful before passing uniformed judgement and ruining the life of a 24 year old who has been a responsible and trusted member of our community. Think before posting please and show that our Somerville community is a community of support and not a place where unfounded condemnation will be accepted.

I know schools are collecting donations to help offset the cost of funeral expenses for Kelly's family. Can someone post information of where to send money for people who don't live in Ridgewood.

It is easy to cast doubt and to question what you read. No good will come of that! And it is not your position to place blame the driver, the home owner or the grass between the driveways!! If you were not there, you have NO idea what truly happened. No one will be able to "wrap their head around it". It was a horrible, tragic accident. Events like that can never be understood or rationalized. Instead of trying to cast blame somewhere, take pause, say a prayer for both families and donate to the funds to help cover the expense of the funeral.

Mary - you are correct, I go down that street (scene of the accident) and the adjacent driveways are inches apart (as many other driveways in town). Instead of comments and any discussion, the best course of action here is best wishes and condolences to all affected.

The report made it seem like the driver had done something crazy, which she apparently did not. It was a horrible tragedy and our sympathies go out to all the victims, including the driver.

@Allison (and others interested in donating) here is information on one of the charities accepting donations on behalf of the Creegan Family:

Sister Lucy for Social Ministry fund. This was started at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church years ago by a man who tragically lost his daughter. The money donated is used to help the grieving family with any expenses as they relate to the death of a child: funeral, monument, burial plot, etc. The funds may also be allocated for grief counseling for the family. Any money donated that is above and beyond what the Creegans would need to cover these costs would remain in the fund to help families in the future who are faced with the same devastation as Jeff and Elise.

Please consider a donation to this very worthwhile cause.

Go to www.olmcridgewood.com.
On the bottom right, you will see a "Contributions - Parish Pay".
Click on that link and it will bring you to a 4-step program.

Step 1 -- OLMC is the selected church.
Step 2 -- Amount of Donation -- go to "specific month donations"; you
will need to scroll down towards the bottom and will see "Sister Lucy
Fund - Creegan Memorial, Nov & Dec" and type in the amount you'd like to
donate.
Step 3 -- Complete the Personal/Billing/Account Information
Step 4 -- Review information and click submit

And, voila, you have contributed to the Creegan Memorial Fund!

Thank you again for your kindness and support.

Jennifer - much thanks for providign this information. I know nothing I can do will soften the Creegans lose but I can at least you have provided me with a way to help them with their expenses and let them know that Ridgewood cares.

Thank G-d justice is not left to the ammature, wannabe, criminal detectives who, at a time of unspeakable loss, shamelessly speculate over a parking arrangement that many in this town of shared driveways has. This is a horrible accident. Save your opinions for the Fox network and use your energies to help those in need; the Creegans and their neighbors

Correct me if I'm wrong, (and I'm sure you will),but I was under the impression that the driver was a neighbor. That is a hell of a burden to carry.
