MALL CRAWLER DOWNTOWN: Shop Local, Ridgewood!

Skip the mall and stay downtown in Ridgewood for the holidays.

Who wants to deal with the tumult the parking, the crowds, the security and the overall chaos that is the mall around the holiday season?

Downtown Ridgewood offers its residents and surrounding community members a number of specialty shops ranging from clothing to shoes to jewelry to home furnishings to gift shops. Add to that an eclectic mix of fine restaurants and a movie theatre and you don't have to trek to the mall.

New life has been breathed into a downtown that just a year ago was struggling with a record-high number of vacancies, increased taxes and fees, and the coup de ta that was the recession. Although challenges still remain in an uncertain economy, the businesses appear to be rebounding.

So stay local and support the village this holiday and beyond! Check out our handy guide on how to spot the right things for you, family and friends.

Clothing:

There are a number of clothing stores located up and down E. Ridgewood Avenue as well as its side streets. Shoppers could start with national retailers like The Gap, Gap Kids, Talbots, Ann Taylor, Gymboree and Lucky Brand Jeans. You've seen the top items in magazines and commercials. Who knows – maybe some will complement your shape and holiday spirit, too?

But it's not all big retail here. There are tons of great small, independent boutiques with stylish items from handmade and fabulous to big-name designers on small-dime discounts. Definitely check out shops like D'moni, Anais Boutique, Victor's, Fox's, Marcia's Attic, Leapin' Lizards, Shop Central, Gardiner & Co., La Casita, Double Take Consignment Shop, Indulge Boutique, Eat Your Spinach, Biltmore Tuxedos Yansi Fugel and Savvy Chic Consignment Boutique.

In short, if you want the hot new jeans at a national jean store or a mink coat on serious discount from a local consignment shop, there's no reason to get stuck circling the parking lot of the mall. It's all here.

Shoes:

In Ridgewood, in order to show off the perfect wardrobe you need to have the perfect shoe. Shoe stores include Shoe-Inn, The Village Tannery–which carries a full line of Ecco footwear–and Just Our Shoes which carries a full line of Mephisto footwear, Steppin' Birkenstock Shoes and Ridgewood Bootery. Birkenstocks may not work very well over the summer, but the German sandal would make a nice gift for a patient individual. Uggs and Ecco's are among the popular brands at the other stores.

Jewelry:

If you are looking for jewelry and accessories check out long time staple Arthur Groom & Co. located at the intersection of East Ridgewood and South Maple Avenues., Hot Jewelry Box, Joaillier, Marta Stephens Fine Jewelry, Red Velvet Luxe, Paris Jewelers, Neil Diamonds, Gerson Jewlers and The Pink Bungalow.

Home Furnishings:

There are plenty of stores that cater to sprucing up your home in the village. Head down to Pompanoosuc Mills, national retailer Sleepy's, Bonami Tile & Stone Gallery, Hillmann Electric, Pangea Antiques & Arts, Backyard Living, Duxiana, P. Smith & Co., Taylor & Taylor Oriental Rugs, The Curtain Exchange and Country Curtains.

If picking up a gift for a relative or friend has you baffled then check out the village's assortment of shops where you can find that special something. Shops include; Mango Jam, Shabbylicious, Happy Tuesday, national retailer Papyrus, Vintage 61 and The Little Flower Shoppe.

Specialty Shops:

Rounding out what the rest of downtown Ridgewood has to offer, you pick up a good read at Bookends (and spot celebrities like The Situation, Tabatha Coffey (a local!), Teresa Guidice, Jamie Lee Curtis), get scented soaps and other items for the bath at B. Witching Bath Co. or Town & Country Apothecary, find various odds and ends at The Secret Studio Store, pick up a gift for a pet at Super Doggy Wonder Kitt or need a new ballet outfit then visit The Dance Bag.
