Molly Wei Takes Plea Deal in Clementi Case

Agrees to three-year pre-trial program with no jail time, must testify against Clementi's roommate Dharun Ravi

The Star Ledger is reporting that the Rutgers dormmate accused of invasion of privacy that led to the has struck a plea bargain and will face no jail time if she completes a pre-trial intervention program.

Molly Wei, 19 of West Windsor, appeared in a Middlsex County courthouse on Friday and plead not guilty to charges of invasion of privacy during what The Star Ledger said was a ten-minute hearing. She will, however, have to testify against high school friend and dormmate Dharun Ravi, 19 of Plainsboro.

Wei and Ravi were each charged with multiple invasion of privacy counts for allegedly using a webcam to film Clementi on separate occasions sexually involved with another man, referred in court papers as "M.B." Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge to his death on September 22, days after another alleged attempt to film him.

As a condition of the three-year pre-trial program deal Wei struck, the former Rutgers student will have to complete 300 hours of community service as well as undergo counseling for cyberbullying and interacting with individuals with alternative lifestyles, The Star Ledger reports. If Wei violates the terms, she would likely face jail time.

Clementi's parents, Joe and Jane, issued a statement shortly after the court proceedings. The couple said they did not object to Wei being enrolled in the program.

"Actions have consequences," the statement read. "We hope (after going through the program) Ms. Wei will become a better person and show kindness to people."

The couple did say, however, that based on information investigators provided to them, they recognize that Wei's actions "were substantially different in their nature and their extent than the actions of Tyler's former roommate. We also understand that Ms. Wei was forthcoming and cooperative during the investigation."

Ravi was , including charges of invasion of privacy with bias intimidation because, prosecutors say, he targeted Clementi for his sexual orientation.

Ravi has also been charged with witness tampering and destruction of evidence for allegedly deleting text messages, altering tweets that could implicate him in the crime and attempting to convince individuals not to testify against him in court. He could face a lengthy prison sentence if found guilty and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Clementi's death sparked a global discussion on the impact of gay bashing and cyberbullying, which also advanced related legislation in New Jersey.

Ravi will be arraigned on May 23.
