The storm appears to have passed by, but the dangers remain considerable in both Ridgewood and Glen Rock.

"Many trees and power lines are down," the village said in a statement Tuesday morning. "This will be a multi-day, multi-week clean up effort – one that will require vigilance, common sense and cooperation."

Police in Ridgewood are urging people to stay indoors and curtail water usage as much as possible. Only life-threatening emergencies should be used for 911, village police said.

Borough officials made similar pleas, telling residents the electrified wires throughout the area still poses considerable public dangers.

"PSE&G has not been out to secure wires, which means these wires - and the water and fences they are touching - are still electrified and a very real threat to public safety," the town said in a statement Tuesday morning. "Please err on the side of caution: Assume all wires are live and do not venture outdoors unless a life-threatening emergency requires you to do so. 

"Once we are sure conditions are safe, we will give the okay for residents to leave their homes."

Between 5,000 and 10,000 customers in Ridgewood are without power. About 2,000-5,000 in Glen Rock are also in the dark.

It's unclear when PSE&G will arrive in either town, officials told Patch. They'll only make it when they believe the situation is safe. It could take a week for the power to be restored, the utility told customers.

Meanwhile, several places are open for business Tuesday morning:

Ridgewood: Sook, Dunkin Donuts, Bagelicious, Daily Treat, Stop & Shop, A&P. A&P in Midland Park is also open.

Glen Rock: Wilkes Deli, Glen Rock Hardware, Bagel Gourmet.
