Glen Rock Screening Provocative Educational Film 'Race to Nowhere'

"Race to Nowhere" co-director and producer Vicki Abeles will be on hand to lead a discussion on academic/life balance for students on May 7.

In concert with its ongoing review on how to ensure  Glen Rock Public Schools will be welcoming "Race to Nowhere" producer/co-director Vicki Abeles for a film screening and discussion in May.

Abeles, whose personal experience with her children's struggles to maintain academic, social and extracurricular workloads was the genesis of the film, will appear at Glen Rock High School on May 7.

The film challenges the interviewing academic experts and students who contend the imbalance damages some students' overall well-being.

Ridgewood was among the first districts nationally to take up some of Race to Nowhere's recommendations, opting to not give students homeworks over breaks. A number of students and administrators from Ridgewood appear in the film.

"Having one of the top performing high schools in the state, Glen Rock is extremely proud of the accomplishments of its students," the district said in a news release. "However, the district also recognizes that the pursuit of excellence can come at a cost. There is a critical need for maintaining balance in the lives of today’s youth. By bringing together Abeles and her film in one thought-provoking evening, the district hopes to engage the public in a meaningful dialogue that will identify key issues and begin the process of determining collaborative changes to address them. Members of all communities are welcome to attend."
