Reminder: Storm Debris Pickups Start Monday
All districts should have the debris on the curb by Monday, village says.

Trucks to pick up the branches and other debris left by Hurricane Sandy won't be coming until Dec. 19 for some, but the village is asking all residents to have the items on the curb by Monday, Dec. 3.
According to the final pickup schedule, contractors and village workers will be out in Area B from Dec. 3-6; Area D from Dec. 10-13; Area C on Dec. 17, 18; and Area A on Dec. 19.
Residents are instructed to place brush and debris between the curb and sidewalk, explicitly not in the street or jumbled in with the leaves. Leaf collection will not be interrupted by the debris clearing.
Brush and debris do not have to be bundled, tied or put in a container as they normally would, though Village Manager Ken Gabbert stressed they should be cut in lengths as close to 3 feet x 2 ½ inches diameter.
Residents can also keep larger items in the back yard until yard waste services resumes again in April. The Recycling Center is also open Monday through Saturday and will accept debris.

My street is located in Area C, yet storm debris was picked up from curbside today, Sunday, December 2 (according to the posted schedule above, we should not have expected such service until December 17).
Are workers that far ahead of schedule, or did Village Manager Ken Gabbert neglect to share the schedule with those doing the work?
Also, Patch previously reported that work would be completed by an outside contractor. Work today on my street was performed by two VOR employees using VOR owned equipment. So what is the straight story?

Hey Boyd,
Thanks for your comment. As far as I'm aware, the contractor is being augmented by village staff. The cost was pegged at around $60K.
As to why your debris in Area C was picked up today (a Sunday, no less), I have no answer for you. My understanding is the village would be following the schedule as posted above. I'll ask the administration and get back to you when/if I hear anything.

You will recall that Dr. Gabbert did not provide direct answers during last week's Public Meeting when I requested the Not to Exceed Amount (NTE) and Resolution Number(s) associated with this initiative.
Thus, I do not believe the Council has legally authorized this project as of now, although they may choose to authorize it after the fact as an Unspecified Emergency Service.

The "problem" Dom is that taxpayers were originally told that the Village would NOT be picking up ANY storm debris. We were told to do one of three things; either take it to the Recycling Center ourselves, hire a contractor to remove it, or save it until Curbside Yard Waste Pickup resumes in the Spring.
Now, after many of us did make countless trips to Recycling, or hire expensive contractors, we are being told that the Village WILL in fact pick up storm debris. I applaud the change in direction, but picking up the debris should have been the decision from day 1.
Additionally, a pickup schedule was released. If the pickup Area C received today is an "extra" one, that's great. But if we will not be seeing trucks on December 17 & 18 as scheduled, many taxpayers who did not get their debris out in time will be very disappointed.

I am in Area B. The sweepers made big piles here yesterday. The village was picking up piles in other parts of the area today. The Village garbage trucks picked up brush, and tree branches of many sizes today. I applaud the workers for doing a good job , and working on a Sunday. I hope they get paid double time and a half for this.

Now people will complain that pickups are going too fast or too slow, truly amazing.
I too made trips to the recycling center because trees had fallen on MY property, therefore Its MY responsibility to remove them. Now I am paying for the overtime and contractors to remove branches from leechers and complainers who refuse to take any responsibility of their own problem. This isn't about the poor old lady, or the disabled individual, this purely to shut up the constant town criers who attend and whine at council meetings and saps who need help at every corner even though they are more then able to perform their responsibilities.
Then.... wait for the bill and watch the same leeches come out and complain that it costs too much!
