Report: Verducci Receiving Additional Six Months of Salary

Departing Superintendent of Schools David Verducci will be receiving six months of salary as well as unused sick days and vacation time after he retires July 1, reports The Glen Rock Gazette.
Verducci, scheduled to make $230,000 this year, announced in February he was retiring to spend more time with his family, and said he would not be taking another job despite speculation it was due to Christie's war against superintendent salaries.
The Gazette reported Verducci is entitled to six months of salary for the two remaining years of his contract; the $115,000 sum will be budgeted in 2011-2012; and a search for an interim superintendent is underway with the help of a hired firm.
Neighboring district Mahwah, hampered by the caps on superintendent pay, is still looking for a top administrator after its leader left the district at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
If trends are an indicator, Glen Rock could be waiting a while to find a permanent replacement – it is legally able to spend $157,500 for a superintendent, $10,000 less than Mahwah and many other districts in the county, which lost dozens of top administrators in the last two years.
The administrator that does end up taking the position may be far less experienced than Verducci, Board President Rona McNabola told Patch after Verducci's initial announcement.
Despite the substantial payout, the district will be receiving some cost savings given the cap Glen Rock will soon be under.
Verducci was named the 2011 Superintendent of the Year by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators' northern region.

Has the BOE explained why the separation package is so generous?
He resigned his position and the town has to payout six months salary plus unused vacation time. I can understand the vacation time, but if it was his decision to leave on July 1st, why are we paying him beyond that point?

There's some more detail in the Rich De Santa article, I'd definitely recommend checking that out.
The terms were negotiated into his contract; he's entitled to three months per year and since there are two years left on his contract, that's the total.
My understanding is this is standard practice for a superintendent contract.

OK Verducci signed a contract. He decides to NOT live up to the contract and quit 2 years early? Therefore he gets parting gifts. As previously stated, why do we need a Superintendent? Why do we need an interim?

I read the article which has me even more concerned. I the terms of that contract are true, had Verducci only served one year and then quit, his severance would have been a year. If this is the norm for all superintendents across the state Christie has missed a huge opportunity to restrain irresponsible boards of education.
I think the concerned citizens of Glen Rock should implore the board of education to impose some real world terms to the next superintendent's contract. The people of Glen Rock deserve better, more accountable oversight than what the BOE has delivered.
One question.... How much separation pay is the Central School principal getting for quitting?

Sad...really sad. Every Superintendent, every chance, every day! What are we teaching our leaders if we cannot reward them for mediocrity? Did he wear a mask when he interviewed for this post two years ago, because he robbed us our tax dollars. By the way, who's going to break the news to him that his book, Travels with Sebastian, is a knockoff of a more popular book, Flat Stanley?
