Saladworks Opening on Chestnut Street

Chain sells salads, soups, wraps and paninis. It could be open this fall.

There's a wealth of healthy options now available in downtown Ridgewood, and soon enough salad shop Salaldworks will join the fray.

A chain with over 100 franchises nationwide, the store was first founded in Cherry Hill in 1986. Saladworks offers a variety of salads, soups, wraps and paninis.

Bob Gallo Jr., Ridgewood resident and real estate developer, will be opening six franchises in Bergen County in the next few years, according to a news release on Saladworks' website.

“Saladworks was the most attractive franchise to me because of the support they offer to new and existing franchisees,” Gallo said in the news release last spring announcing the deal. “I wanted to help develop the North Jersey market and becoming a part of this cooperative and energetic team is helping me do so.”

In a telephone conversation Friday, Gallo Jr. said they're shooting for an October or November opening. The site had previously been home to a dry cleaning business.

Saladworks will face stiff competition even on its own block if it wants to corner the healthy food market. Across the street is Muscle Maker Grill and Lettuce Inn and a few feet south is popular Chestnut Deli.

This article was updated a 9:25 a.m. Friday to include comment from Gallo Jr.

My daughter and I went to a place like this in White Plains, NY last summer (it might even have been the same franchise) and it was fabulous! We loved it so much we went back the next day and lamented the fact that we had nothing like this in North Jersey. I am delighted that this is about to change. If this is as good as the one we went to there will be no serious competition for them as far as I am concerned. Can't wait!

It's July. How is October or November a month or two?

I updated the article after I spoke with Mr. Gallo. He said there have been a few delays and October or November is likely the target. The subhead should have been changed as well, but I missed it while updating.

So let me get this straight, you pick your lettuce, add a dressing and a topping or two and make your own salad, all for around $10.00. I put that invention a close third to the wheel and sliced bread. Now where can I find an overpriced Smoothie to wash it down, Oh yeah Red Mango. I can't wait.

Why is this sounding like the make-your-own-pizza place that closed?

We ordered from Salad Works today for lunch at noon. I work right in Ridgewood about two blocks away.... They finally delivered our order over TWO hours later!!!! I would comment on how the food is, but I can't because they also forgot to include part of our order (my salad)!!!! We have called back to tell them to deliver the salad they forgot, after multiple tries and 45 minutes later we have been finally able to get through to them. This is just absolutely ridiculous. Even more, the manager got on the phone and had told us we could have the order for free and then proceeded to charge us when it was delivered! 3 hours later they say they will get me my order ASAP... We'll see how long it takes them. Either way I will never eat at Salad Works again.
