Funny People Wanted for Comedy Open Mic at Teaneck General Store
Stand-up, music, dance, sports — there's something on the calendar for everyone
Think you're funny?
You will want to show up to the Teaneck General Store with your best jokes in hand Saturday night.
The Store is hosting its fourth family-friendly Comedy Night, and beginning comics (as well as experienced ones) are invited to share the spotlight with headliner, and relative newcomer, Mordechai Schmutter.
Schmutter is a Passaic resident who has been dabbling in the world of comedy for almost six years with a weekly humor column in the Hamodia newspaper. His Orthodox Judiasm is part of what drives him.
“There aren’t a lot of stand-up Orthodox Jewish comedians out there, and my goal is to get it to be [more common],” Schmutter said.
If you’re wondering how you will come up with material for a set, you might not have to look any further than your own life. Schmutter said that his material comes from, “Anywhere and everywhere, and usually from the most unexpected places.”
Schmutter recalled one instance, where he was very behind on a deadline for his column and desperate for inspiration.
“I was scouring comedy websites, online magazines, etc., trying to findsomething that would spark my funny bone, and I wasn't getting anywhere, because the entire time, my kids kept coming up to me and asking me for snacks,” Schmutter explained. “And then I realized that I was looking in the wrong direction the entire time, and I wrote a column about kids bugging you for food while you're trying to work.”
Schmutter is also the author of several books, including "Don't Yell 'Challah' in a Crowded Matzah Bakery," "A Clever Title Goes Here" and "This Side Up."
According to Bruce Prince, manager of the Teaneck General Store, the comedians and content do indeed vary widely.
"Our comedians have been college students, seniors, a psychiatrist, social workers, lawyers, college professors and authors," Prince said. "We’ve had repeat performers and many more repeat attendees."
Those looking for a non-scary first experience will probably do well on Comedy Night — Prince says that the audiences have typically been very kind, and even forgiving when a set doesn't go as planned.
"Comedy is a favorite at the Teaneck General Store and it provides a forum for both novice and experienced comedians in the Teaneck area," Prince said of this event, which has seen audiences of up to 80 people.
The Teaneck General Store has an ongoing calendar of events including poetry readings, book signings, writing workshops and musical performances.
For more information about the Comedy Night, contact Bruce Prince at 201-530-5046. Walk-ins are also welcome to perform. Because families frequently attend, comics are asked to keep their material PG-rated.
