Destination Patio

Destination: Patio

The outdoor living trend is now a way of life for many private homeowners. Patios are beautiful extensions of the home, the bridge between the indoors and the backyard living space which often contains a gourmet outdoor kitchen, fireplace, pool or spa.  These patios and outdoor spaces create extended entertainment options for homeowners and their guests or can be private hideaways that provide a “getaway” feeling … a relaxation destination without leaving home.

·      Generous space is crucial. A patio area fills quickly so you need to go bigger than you expect. Consider how much furniture you will have and how it will be arranged when making your plans.

·      Where is the patio in relation to the home, sunlight and the rest of the property? This will affect a number of things. For instance:

o   How does the homeowner want to exit the home?

o   Will the project be a multi-level patio or will it lead to a pool?

·      Will there be separate areas for cooking, dining and entertainment? How will these areas and features be laid out and where?

o   You can create a grilling area with a multi-level patio tied together with seat walls (retaining wall)

o   Separate spaces define each area and are multi-functional

o   Make sure to tie in the design of the outdoor kitchen with the patio

o   Consider breaking up the space with a planting bed to separate the areas as well, even if it’s not multi-tiered.

·      The importance of water features and lighting, depending on the project:

o   Exterior lighting is very important for multi-level patios.

o   Water features add a soothing effect and are very natural. Water can attract a variety of birds and butterflies and ties in the wildlife with the plant materials.  Add some fish.

·      Exposure to Sunlight

o   Borst has designed pergolas that filter sunlight and provide great architectural interest

o   Add vines for more coverage and aesthetic
