Fall Container Gardens

Just because the spring and summer months are over does not mean you can no longer have beautiful container gardens. To make a dramatic entry, use three or five containers, always use an odd number to create depth using varying sizes and styles of pots.

Now that you have chosen the pots and plants that you want to use, you need to make sure that you take the proper care of them.

  1. Water: Pots in full sun often require daily or twice-daily watering.  However, be careful with the pots that are in the shade, as they need less water.  Wait until the soil dries out before watering again.
  2. Pruning: Regularly deadhead and snip off blooms and brown leaves to keep your container garden looking fresh and new. Deadheading also encourages new growth.
Lighting: Place pots where they will receive the amount of sun or shade that is appropriate for the plants in them.
  3. Mobility: As the season changes, so too will the position of the sun. So to make sure your plants stay alive longer, move the plants to follow sun.
  4. Focus: The planters will ensure that the focus of your garden or outdoor living space is where you want it to be. For instance if you want to entertain on the patio, then move the planters closer to the patio.
  5. If your backyard is already very green? Plant pots full of bright annuals to add color.
  6. Is your yard all dirt or all roots? Planting in pots will help alleviate the frustration of unfertile soil problems.
