Van Peenen's Closes After 83 Years

Family-owned business was founded in 1929. Company started by delivering milk to people's homes.

The 83-year-old Van Peenen’s Dairy on Valley Road has closed.

The family-owned business was forced to shut down operations on Tuesday.

The 2-acre property, normally buzzing with activity and the coming and going of delivery trucks, has been eerily quite since then.

A woman who answered the phone Wednesday evening said, “There’s nobody here anymore. Everybody’s gone. The bank forced us to close.” The woman would not give her name and declined further comment.

Leonard Singer, the company’s attorney, did not respond to messages seeking comment.

The third-generation business has been marred in financial trouble of late.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year. That filing came 14 months after a federal court awarded a $767,000 judgment, plus interest and other costs, against the Van Peenen brothers who own the company.

Van Peenen Property, LLC, listed on township tax files as owning the property, owes the town nearly $64,000 in taxes, including more than $8,200 in interest and nearly $2,300 in penalties.

Marinus Van Peenen and his wife Gerturude founded in the company as a home delivery milk service in 1929.

“I could remember like it was yesterday that their trucks could be seen not just in Wayne but outside the township too,” said Councilman Joseph Schweighardt. “It’s sad to see them go. A great business and a great family runs it."

My last nights post was removed and I don't know why when I didn't say anything wrong except my opinion... Isn't it called freedom of speech? Well lets see if this is better .....Oh really? what parades have they paid for? You scratch my back i scratch yours? ahhhhh that you don't mention. Must I put out facts? lets stop acting like we all didn't know this happened years ago. Why wasn't this published when the records were public? let me guess? favoritism? Has Van Peenen done anything else for this town since everyone graduated? hummmm. Don't confuse my opinion to hatred because there isn't any here. I'm just tired of the fake-ness of some of the people who have had nothing good to say about most of them. My opinions have nothing to do with the grandparents. Read carefully before you judge.

At Dead Hoffa! Thank you for stepping up. This town and site need real people with real opinions. None of this bologna stuff. They wont tell you the thousands that they owe, food they have taken away from families from monies owed. Lets all give them a chest bump for what they did. Thank you again for your courage!

Fboy, I didn't get beat by the Van Peenens because I had a better lawyer than they did! I'm grateful I have the resources to make these types of "business people" pay for goods and services rendered in good faith. Good faith being a term that they do not care to understand. In life we all reap what we sow. The hammer will soon drop on the the other "one" as well that has left a huge trail of debt and deceit......
