Pick It Up!

it's a dirty little affair...
It is a simple fact of dog ownership that we as guardians are responsible for our dog's waste. For non-dog owners this is the number one pet peeve and the basis for arguing the limitation of space where dogs and their owners are welcome. And yet there are those who would risk the rights of dog parents everywhere simply because they are not fond of the task of simply in a world of their own. When I walk my dog in my own neighborhood I often bring extra bags to not only share but to sometimes pick up other dogs poop. Why? Because in my townhouse community this prevents non dog lovers from taking offense and also creates a safe and healthy environment for my dog too as many illnesses are passed along by feces left behind.

And there has never been a better time for scooping poop...
With so many options for removing waste and with fabulous style, how can a dog owner not be responsible. On a recent visit to JB Pet in Hawthorne I found all sorts of options for the dirty deed: Mutt Mitts, rakes and plastic scoopers and earth-friendly bags in fashion styles. And the holders for these bags can get quite creative too. You can even purchase some crazy designs on Etsy or make and sell your own bag holders. I wonder if Gucci has one yet?

Dog friendly areas will continue to disappear unless we do something...
If you see someone preoccupied and unaware their dog has done the dirty deed why not say hello and offer one of your bags? You just may make a new friend. And if they resist why not share your concerns about losing dog rights? And with so many young children absorbed in iPads and phones from an early age, shouldn't we continue to have dogs in public spaces to develop a connection with animals and nature?  And finally, there are so many individuals that count on their dogs for companionship in the often impersonal world we live in. Some are navigating divorce, the loss of a spouse or depression. Dogs have become much more than family pets as they take on new roles providing comfort and support. It is our responsibility as community to make sue a few negligent people do not ruin the privilege we have fought do hard to earn.
