Update from the Political World

Update on politics from a teen immersed in the field

I’ve now been at the Borough President’s Office working as an intern for a month and I am in the throws of political happenings. So far, I feel like I have truly learned a lot. I have worked diligently on a memo regarding the Supreme Court decision that was released on the legality of PPACA aka Obamacare. In my opinion, Health Care in the United States needs reform; however, this is not the right reform. Obama’s health care reform takes away rights of the individual by the new mandate and in my eye’s that is unconstitutional.

This weekend I started watching the new HBO show, The Newsroom, and the pilot episode starts with the fact that America is no longer the best country in the world. The United States needs to focus on revamping itself rather than continuing to hurt itself through such plans as the new health care bill.

This week I have already done work regarding the DREAM Act which would basically grant government funds to illegal alien students who have been in the country since childhood. Once again I see that the goals of the act are positive, but the negativity and new draw of immigrants that the passing of the act would cause outweighs the positives of giving education to those who may not be able to afford it due to the state of their citizenship.
