PHOTOS: Luminaries Lit to Honor Mothers of Deceased Armed Service Members

Sunday marked Gold Star Mothers Day and residents descended on Van Neste Square in Ridgewood to light luminaries in honor of their sacrifice.

Residents from Ridgewood and surrounding towns lit up Van Neste Square Sunday night with hundreds of luminaries to honor mothers who have lost a son or daughter fighting for their country.

Gold Star Mothers Day is a national effort to bring awareness and recognize the sacrifices made by mothers and their families while their children fight overseas.

Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck was on hand Sunday night and took these photos.

The photos are beautiful (thank you Gwenn) and it looks like the evening was very moving. While I think this is a lovely event, I think that the gold-star recognition should not be limited to mothers. What about gold-star fathers? What about gold-star siblings? Gold-star spouses? Gold-star grandparents? Every family member suffers when a loved one is overseas in the military, and they all suffer for the rest of their lives when he or she does not come back home. Forty-five years ago my brother did not come home and I miss him every day. The gold star should recognize all family members, not just the mothers.
