Film Showing at Unitarian Society of Ridgewood: "Gen Silent," a Documentary on LGBT Aging

The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood's Living the Welcoming Committee will host a showing of "Gen Silent," an award-winning documentary by filmmaker Stu Maddux about the struggles of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender older people who fought the first battles for equality and now, aging and needing care, find themselves confronting discrimination in a new setting.

Following six LGBT seniors over the course of a year, the filmmakers discover great disparities in the quality of paid caregiving.

There are mainstream care facilities committed to making their LGBT residents safe and happy--and places where LGBT elders face discrimination by staff and bullying by other seniors.

Many LGBT seniors are isolated and afraid to ask for help. Many fear they have no choice but to be silent about their lives. But a growing number of people are fighting to keep LGBT aging from meaning aging in silence.

Doors open at 7:00 PM with the film showing at 7:30 PM and discussion after the film. Refreshments will be served.
