Cops: Man Stole Dad's Car, Led Police on 100 MPH Chase

Glen Rock Police Officer Greg Carter attempted to stop David Abad, 28, on Maple Avenue for tinted windows in the front of the car, a motor vehicle violation, Glen Rock Police Capt. John Miller said.

When Abad failed to stop, officers from Glen Rock began a pursuit of the 2008 BMW 328xi up 208 North shortly before 2 a.m., according to police.

Franklin Lakes Detective Lt. John Bakelaar said that when Abad left the highway, he attempted to ram the passenger side of a Franklin Lakes patrol car waiting at the corner of Sunset Terrace and Colonial Road.

“The officer was able to evade it and the car continued,” Bakelaar said.

Police continued the pursuit up Franklin Avenue, Bakelaar said, but when the speed of Abad’s car exceeded 100 mph officers had to cut off the chase due to safety concerns.

Officers went to the residence where the car was registered and discovered that the owner, Abad’s father, had left the car at a Franklin Lakes service station and that “no one was authorized to take it,” Bakelaar said.

Police recovered the abandoned vehicle on Iron Latch Road, and hours later found Abad walking on Commerce Street, where he was arrested after a foot chase shortly before 6 a.m.

Abad was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, motor vehicle theft, eluding police, as well as several motor vehicle violations, police said. He was sent to Bergen County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Abad was arrested by Wyckoff police in April for possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. He was also picked up for active warrants out of Elmwood Park, police said at the time.
