Girl, 6, Killed In Driveway On Overbrook Road

Somerville first-grader struck by car; prosecutor says incident being treated as a "very bad accident."

A 6-year-old girl died early Monday night after she was struck by a vehicle in a driveway on Overbrook Road,  said.

Details of the incident, which occurred about 5:30 pm, have not been released.

A message sent to parents by school officials identified the victim as first-grader Kelly Creegan.

School counselors, the child study team and other school personnel will be available Tuesday to offer support to students, Somerville Elementary School Principal Lorna Oates-Santos wrote.

“It’s a tragic loss for this community,” Police Chief John Ward said from the scene. ”Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this terrible loss.”

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said that the incident is a "very bad accident that has not been classified as anything other than that at this time."

Ridgewood police said no charges have been filed and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police tape could be seen strung across a driveway, as the Fatal Accident Unit of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and a crime scene unit from the sheriff’s department investigated the death.

The investigators could be seen gathered around a black car in the driveway.
