Hawthorne Woman Facing DUI Charges After Utility Pole Crash

Glen Rock police claim woman was under the influence when she hit a utility pole on Saturday night, knocking out power to residents nearby.

A Hawthorne woman is facing DUI charges after police say she crashed her Lexus into a utility pole Saturday night and knocked out power to residents around Lincoln Avenue.

Cpt. Jonathan Miller said Carol Maas, 50, of Hawthorne, struck a utility pole on Lincoln Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night, knocking down lines and cutting off power in the neighborhood.

Maas did not suffer injuries in the crash, Miller said. She was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), refusal to submit to a breath test and careless driving.

Officers from Hawthorne and Glen Rock were stationed at the site of the crash for 12 hours while workers from the utility company attended to the damaged pole and wires, Miller said.

Maas was released on her own recognizance and has an upcoming date at Glen Rock Municipal Court.

Hopefully her auto insurance company is being billed for the police overtime incurred in connection with the accident.
