Overnight HAZMAT Scare Delays Train

Two-hour delay caused by suspicious—and ultimately unharmful—substance.

A Sunday morning train was delayed two hours in Ridgewood due to suspicious material found onboard, which was later deemed to be innocuous.

Fire Chief James Bombace said today a NJ Transit official found a white powder on a train early April 18. When the train pulled into Ridgewood station, officials alerted the fire department, and it responded at 1:21 a.m.

Hazardous material officials arrived on scene and evacuated the train for precautionary reasons. The officials said the substance was not chemically or biologically dangerous, but did collect it for further testing.
