Police: Bicyclist Swerved Into Pickup Truck, Taken to Hospital

Cyclist reportedly swerved to avoid dust cloud caused by construction work at a curb

A bicyclist heading down East Ridgewood Avenue near the high school was taken to the hospital after striking a black pickup truck on Tuesday just past noon, police confirmed Tuesday night.

Lt. David McDermott said the man, whose identity was not released, was riding his bicycle east on East Ridgewood Avenue when he swerved into the road to avoid a cloud of dust caused by a construction crew working on the sidewalk on the intersection of Southern Parkway and East Ridgewood Avenue.

The bicyclist struck a black Nissan pickup truck, McDermott said and fell to the ground. The man is believed to have sustained a shoulder injury and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, but police could not confirm as of press time.

No citations were reportedly issued in the accident and there was no report of damage to the vehicle.

if this was the other way around the motorist would be ticketed, so why isnt the cyclist?

Hi Danny, I'm not so sure a motorist would be ticketed given the circumstances of the dust impeding sight lines. Question for you – I know of a few accidents involving bicyclists over the past year or so. In your personal observations, do you notice cyclists abiding the rules of the road?
