Cars Damaged, $10K Utility Box Destroyed in Red Light Collision

Two taken to the hospital in the Thursday night accident at the intersection of N. Monroe and W. Glen in Ridgewood.

A Ridgewood man had to be removed from his vehicle by firefighters after another driver ran a red light and collided with his Honda Civic Thursday night, according to village police.

Police said a vehicle traveling west on Glen Avenue blew through the red light at around 9 p.m., striking the vehicle driven by the Ridgewood resident at the N. Monroe St. intersection. The force of the impact sent the vehicle careening into a signal equipment box and then into the park.

Firefighters extricated the victim, removing the driver's side door. Both drivers were transported to Valley Hospital suffering from what Sgt. John Chuck described as minor injuries.

The male driver from Midland Park was issued a citation for running a red light, Chuck said.

With the $10,000 utility box ripped into steel chunks, the stop light at N. Monroe and W. Glen is being powered by a generator.

Police are expected to patrol the intersection at rush hour on Friday morning. The utility box may not be fixed for days.
