Police Officer Killed in Route 17 Accident

Southbound right and center lanes remained closed early Thursday morning.

A Bergen County police officer working radar was killed early Thursday morning when his vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer in Waldwick on Route 17 southbound.

The incident, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m., remains under investigation, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said.

The southbound right and center lanes remained closed as of 6 a.m. Thursday for the accident investigation.

The Waldwick Township Police Officer was identified as Christopher Goodell, 32, a five-year veteran and former Marine, according to NorthJersey.com.

Goodell, a Waldwick High School grad, was in an unmarked car parked on the Route 17 shoulder near Bergen Avenue when the accident happened, NorthJersey.com reported.

The tractor trailer driver was not charged as of early Thursday morning.
