75-Year-Old Woman Fatally Struck Attempting to Cross Route 17 on Foot

No charges filed against the driver who struck the Union, NJ resident

A 75-year-old woman was struck and killed attempting to cross Route 17 on foot Saturday night, Ridgewood police have confirmed.

Sgt. Glenn Ender said the woman, identified as Rosa Pineiro of Union, NJ, got off the on Route 17 at around 8 p.m. and attempted to reach the southbound side. She was struck in the center lane of the northbound side, according to police.

Pineiro was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed against the driver, Ridgewood Police Cpt. Jacqueline Luthcke stated Monday.

Police say the victim crossed to reach someone picking her up on the southbound side near the . It's unclear why she did not use the footbridge to cross the highway, according to authorities.

Route 17 northbound from Linwood Avenue in Paramus was closed for several hours while numerous agencies investigated the accident.
