Quick Response From RFD Puts Down Dryer Fire

Lint that sparked likely the cause of the early Sunday morning house fire on Delaware Avenue

A swift response from the Ridgewood Fire Department likely prevented a fiery dryer from spreading and causing a serious house fire early Sunday morning, fire officials say.

Firefighters responded to the 12:21 a.m. call at a Delaware Avenue home where heavy smoke had developed in the basement from a dryer that had caught fire, Cpt. Paul Monton said from the scene.

Due to the quick response, firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading.

"It was burning pretty good," Monton said. "If we got there five minutes later, it would have been a very different story."

The Lawns-area resident was awoken by a smoke detector and alerted responders; no injuries were reported.

Lint that had not been cleared from the trap appeared the likely culprit, Monton said. The dryer–charred from the fire–was taken out of the house and placed in the back lawn.

Outside of minor smoke damage and odor, no damage was reported.
