Report: North Jersey Cops Collecting Thousands in Payouts

Lawmakers have stalled in reforming payout laws that have allowed towns to accumulate $1.5 million in payout debt over the past three months, report says.

Local lawmakers are "stalling" to change payout laws that have seen North Jersey taxpayers fund $1.5 million in police payouts over the past three months, NorthJersey.com reported.

According to the report, the money is being paid out to retiring police chiefs in Bergen and Passaic Counties to cover unused sick, vacation, and compensatory time.

The report outlined a handful of public employees who are collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments each.

State lawmakers have been going back and forth on the issues, the report said, with some calling for no payouts at all, and others saying some payouts are necessary. Bills supported in the past have either lost support or been vetoed, as lawmakers have argued over a compromise in terms of payout caps and limits, the report said.
