Ridgewood Man Faces Drug Charges After Crashing into Tree, Police Say

Heroin allegedly found after head-on collision over the weekend.

A Ridgewood man was in possession of drugs when he veered off road and crashed his car over the weekend, police said.

Nicholas Demetro, 25, was driving on Fairfield Avenue around 11:30 Sunday night when his car crossed into the opposite lane and slammed head-on into a tree, according to police.

When Officers Joseph Dibenedetto, Joseph Youngberg and Sgt. Heath James responded to the single car accident, they allegedly found an unspecified amount of heroin, synthetic marijuana and hypodermic needles in the wrecked vehicle.

Demetro was charged with possession of marijuana, heroin and drug paraphernalia, as well as several motor vehicle violations, police said.

Police did not specify whether Demetro was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of undisclosed injuries and released pending an appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court.

According to court records, Demetro also has pending charges of assault and eluding police stemming from a June arrest in Ridgewood, and a charge of theft out of Wood-Ridge.
