'Suspicious Package' in Garbage Can Deemed Safe

Bergen County bomb squad, police descended on the Wild Duck Pond in Ridgewood Wednesday afternoon on report there was a suspicious package in a garbage can.

A suspicious package placed in a garbage pale at the Wild Duck Pond turned out to be garbage, authorities reported Wednesday.

Police received a 911 report at 12:50 p.m. that there was a suspicious black bag in a garbage receptacle, and quickly evacuated the area near the playground. The park was closed off to the public.

Using a portable x-ray machine, a county bomb squad technician determined the "suspicious" black bag was not a threat, Ridgewood Police Lt. Forest Lyons said.
