UPDATE: Teen Boy Struck, Driver Flees Scene Early Tuesday Morning

17-year-old at Valley with non life-threatening injuries after being struck by car at Grove and S. Pleasant

[Editor's note: Updated at 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9 to include information that police say the alleged driver has turned himself in.]

The driver accused of striking the pedestrian that sent the victim to the hospital Tuesday morning, has turned himself in according to police.

At approximately 7:15 a.m., a late model teal Mazda traveling eastbound on Grove Street struck a 17-year-old boy just past the intersection of South Pleasant Street, Ridgewood Police Captain Jacqueline Luthcke told Patch shortly after the incident. The driver then fled the scene in the direction of Paramus, Luthcke said.

Ridgewood resident Matthew Cermak, 21, has been charged by police with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and careless driving. He turned himself in voluntarily, police say.

The victim was transported to Valley Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Luthcke said. The RPD and surrounding departments were searching for the vehicle–which was missing its passenger-side mirror–for much of the morning.

Neighbors on Grove Street said they heard a loud pop at about 7:15 a.m. and found a juvenile boy who lives nearby in the front yard. "He had marks all over his back but he was conscious though dazed," neighbors told Patch shortly after the strike.

The boy was believed to have been jogging with headphones on when struck. His parents were notified of the strike and joined their son at the hospital, police said.

One of the victim's shoes was found approximately 40 feet away from his body and portions of the vehicle's mirror scattered along the roadside and neighbors' lawns.

Police say Cermak faces a day in municipal court on both charges.
