Teenage Boy Struck in Crosswalk on Godwin

The boy was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police say.

A teenage boy was struck while in the crosswalk of Godwin Avenue toward Pomander Walk and has been taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Sgt. Forest Lyons confirmed Friday night.

Lyons reported that the victim suffered a shoulder injury but one that is not considered life threatening. The family has been notified of the strike–which occurred before 9:45 p.m.–he said.

A witness on scene said a maroon four-door sedan was halfway through the crosswalk in the direction of Whole Foods, and the boy was thrown several feet upon impact. A shoe flew off and landed several yards away, the witness said. A street light at the eastern side of the crosswalk on Pomander was out and partially obstructed by a tree; PSE&G was at the scene but the light was not fixed as of late Friday night.

"It's dangerous," said owner Rina Desai of the crosswalk located between two strip malls on Godwin Avenue. Desai said it's the third pedestrian strike in the last year at the intersection and multiple requests for better lighting have been made, to no avail, she added. "I'm praying for the boy," she said shortly after the incident.

Friday night's hit marks the second pedestrian struck this week in Ridgewood. on Tuesday night while crossing the road. Her injuries were considered minor and a Carlstadt man was issued two citations related to the incident, police said.

Police are still investigating the cause of Friday night's strike and could not comment further.
