Three Teen Pedestrians Hospitalized in Two Separate Incidents

Summonses were issued to drivers in two separate cases, which left three teens hospitalized after being struck while in a crosswalk.

Three teens have been sent to in two separate incidents after being struck by vehicles while in crosswalks on Friday afternoon.

At 3:32 p.m., two 13-year-old boys were crossing at Linwood Avenue and Oak Street.

A driver turning south onto Oak Street collided with the two boys, sending one approximately 20 to 25 feet, Lt. William Amoruso said. The other boy suffered an arm injury while attempting to hold back the other boy to avoid the car.

The severity of the injuries of the boy thrown were not immediately known as of press time. Officers provided medical assistance and ambulance services transported both to Valley Hospital.

"The parents were immediately notified," Amoruso said.

A citation for a failure to yield to a pedestrian crossing a crosswalk was issued to the driver, who told police he was affected by sun glare at the time of the collision, police said.

Meanwhile, at about the same time, a 14-year-old high school student walking home from school was crossing on North Irving and E. Ridgewood Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle.

Patrolman Mark Butler said that her injuries were not believed to be life threatening and a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk was also issued to that the driver. The victim was transported to Valley Hospital and parents have been notified of the incident.

The village has recently stepped up crosswalk safety enforcement efforts, including using decoys, after a rash of incidents in October and one .
