Train Gates Stuck at Boro Hall Station

Nominal nuisance corrected in less than an hour.

The boom gates at the train crossing on Rock Road near Borough Hall were stuck in the down position for about 45 minutes on Wednesday.

Police were on the scene immediately to help direct traffic after mechanical failure of the gates protecting traffic and pedestrians from passing NJ Transit trains prevented them from returning to the raised position.

Glen Rock Police Captain Jonathan Miller said he was driving in the area at approximately 1:15 p.m. when the problem occured. He stopped to help direct traffic, with the assistance of another officer, safely around the horizontal barriers.

"When one of the trains went by [the barriers] went down and wouldn't come back up," Miller said.

He and another officer stood just feet from the tracks, ensuring there were no trains approaching the station near Rock and Harding roads, and signaled single lanes of traffic to navigate past gates and across the train tracks.

There was no extraordinary backup of traffic on Rock Road.

A NJ Transit employee pulled up to the scene at approximately 1:45 p.m. and checked the tracks before entering the adjacent electrical shed.

Within 10 minutes of the NJ Transit worker's arrival, the gates were in their upright position and traffic had returned to normal.
