Village Names Senior Police Officer as Chief Departs

Captan John Ward will oversee department until a provisional appointment is made.

Captain John Ward took over the Ridgewood Police Department as senior officer in charge, effective at noon Friday.

Village Manger Dr. Ken Gabbert announced the appointment Friday afternoon. Ward will succeed Chief John LiPuma, who will officially retire Sept. 1, but finished work July 16.

"It is with great appreciation and respect that we wish Chief LiPuma the best in retirement. The Village of Ridgewood is grateful for his 25 years of service," Gabbert said.

LiPuma joined the department in 1985, and became chief Jan. 1, 2009.

Ward will manage the department in cooperation with the Village Manager's Office, Gabbert said. A provisional chief should be named before Sept. 1.
