Construction Worker Strikes Water Main in Ridgewood

Subcontractor struck pipe at about 11 a.m. on West End Avenue; a few local roads remain closed while crews work to repair the break.

A PSE&G subcontractor performing construction work on West End Avenue struck a 10-inch water pipe at about 11 a.m., sending water throughout the street.

Cpt. Paul Monton, of the , said there was concern the water would reach basements. Luckily, he said, an inspection of numerous homes found no water present.

The fire department was able to utilize pumps to bring the flowing water down to more manageable levels, Monton said. Crews from Ridgewood Water are still digging to find the primary main.

West End Ave. remains closed, as does Godwin Ave. between Lincoln and Highlands Ave. There is no timetable for the road to reopen, authorities said. PSE&G has been replacing gas lines throughout the village in the last month.
