County Settles Lawsuit With Employee Who Claimed She Was Fired For Being Gay

Joanne Miltner filed the lawsuit against the county, claiming she was wrongfully fired for revealing she was gay when she filed sexual harassment complaints against a co-worker.

Bergen County officials have settled a lawsuit for a payment of $199,000 to the estate of a former assistant director of the county’s addiction recovery program, according to northjersey.com.

Joanne Miltner, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 57, filed the lawsuit in 2011 for sexual harassment and discrimination, in which she alleged she had been fired because she was gay.

Miltner claimed in the lawswuit that she was fired after 20 years as a county employee because she had filed complaints against a male co-worker who she said made sexual remarks and homophobic slurs to her and several others in their office. Four former co-workers filed statements supporting Miltner's claims as witnesses to the harassment in the lawsuit. The co-worker who Miltner had filed harassment complaints against no longer works for the Bergen County.
