Town Appoints First Female African American Mayor in Bergen County History

Lizette Parker was unanimously voted in at a reorganization meeting Tuesday, report says.

During a reorganization meeting Tuesday, the Teaneck town council made Bergen County history.

The council voted unanimously to appoint Lizette Parker mayor, making her the first African American female mayor not only in Teaneck's history, but in Bergen County's, NorthJersey.com reported.

Parker is a two-term councilwoman who won a municipal election this May, the report said. Before taking the helm during the rest of Teaneck's council meeting this week, Parker commented on her historic appointment.

“To my [toddler] daughter, Alyssa, who does not realize what is happening this evening, she will grow up and know she can be anything she wants — even Teaneck mayor and things beyond,” she said in her acceptance speech, NorthJersey.com reported.
