Election, 'Danger' Forces Closure of Village Schools on Monday, Tuesday

Superintendent Daniel Fishbein says they're working on a Wednesday contingency plan.

With power still out for a number of village schools and the challenges of elections fast approaching, Ridgewood Public Schools will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to parents on Sunday, Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said police believe school routes are still too dangerous to travel. There's also that little "complicating factor" with the elections set to hit several schools on Tuesday.

"We have worked out contingency plans to start school on Wednesday if streets are safe to pass," Fishbein said in his message.

PSE&G is in the village, though the work is not moving as quickly as most would hope.

"Unfortunately, PSE&G can't clear the trees from the wires fast enough," Fishbein said. "Additionally, PSE&G doesn't have enough crews to restore the wiring when trees have been removed from the wires."

Somerville Elementary School will remain open as a charging station on Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Fishbein said.

"I know these are very trying times. I implore everyone to stay calm and be patient. I can assure you that we will get through this and life will get back to normal."

Fishbein also said the notice is subject to change based on continuing work over the next 36 hours.

Glen Rock schools are also closed on Monday and Tuesday.
