New RHS Employee Awarded for Time as Student Teacher

Kevin McOwen was one of 15 in state named a distinguished student teacher.

One of Ridgewood High School’s new hires earned a prestigious award last week from the New Jersey Department of Education, for standing out during his time as a student teacher.

Kevin McOwen, who was hired this year to teach math at the high school, was given a Distinguished Student Teacher Award for his work as a post-baccalaureate student at Ramapo College. Only 15 newly certified teachers in the state received the recognition at a ceremony at Rider University in June.

High school Principal Tom Gorman said that the McOwen has done well in the transition to his full-time teaching role.

“He is enthusiastic and enjoys teaching the students mathematics,” Gorman said. “He has been a welcome addition.”

McOwen was one of three education students nominated by Ramapo for the award. His nomination was reviewed and chosen by a panel of education experts.
