RHS Band Takes Second in First Competition of Season

The Ridgewood High School Marching Band kicked off its 2013 season Saturday with a second place finish in its first competition of the year.

The competition, held at Pequannock High School, featured five bands in Ridgewood’s group, who were scored by a panel of judges on music, percussion, color guard, visual performance and overall effect.

Under the direction of John Luckenbill, the band took second place to Vernon High School, additionally taking away the award for best music. Their current show, titled "Rush Hour" is themed around New York City modes of transportation and features pop hits "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by John Denver and "Empire State of Mind" by Alicia Keys.

The competition season kick off came a day after the band was featured on CBS morning show “The Couch” live from the high school field.

Comprised of 96 students, 41 of whom are freshmen, the band performs at each RHS home football game, and will next compete in the Yamaha Cup Oct. 5 at Met Life Stadium.
