Somerville Taking Part in Two World Record Attempts

Kids will be running 100 meters, lining their shoes on Friday.

Somerville Elementary School students might just put two world record attempts over the top on Friday, Oct. 26.

Students will be running 100 meters and also lining their shoes to form the longest chain of shoes. More than 5,000 people worldwide are needed to run the 100 meters simultaneously to break the Guiness record; while 25,000-plus are needed to line their shoes at once.

The shoes will be collected and sent to National Geographic Society headquarters, eventually to be recycled into athletic surfaces.

Students will be joining the initiative – called "Run for the Planet" – on Oct. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. Run for the Planet supports First Lady Michele Obama's "Let's Move!" health campaign.
