Lifeguard Training

Length:  30 hours

Lifeguard training is designed for candidates to learn the skills and build the confidence to save a life at moment’s notice. Candidates learn about lifeguard professionalism, effective scanning and injury prevention alone with water rescue skills, CPR/AED for Lifeguards and First Aid.

First Day of Class

  •  
    1. First candidates are required to complete a pre-course session consisting of a continuous 300 yard swim, alternating between front crawl (freestyle) and breaststroke, this swim is not timed.
    2. Next candidates must complete a brick retrieval by swimming from the shallow-end to the deep end, performing a feet-first surface dive, and retrieve a 10 lbs brick from a depth of 13ft, and then maintaining a back float while holding the brick above the water level to the shallow-end and then exit the pool without steps or a ladder; this must be completed within a 1 min 40 sec time limit.

Lifeguard candidates are strongly advised if they wear contacts to bring extras for the pre-course session and each class session.

There are NO REFUNDS for candidates who do not successfully pass the pre-course session on the first day of class.

Attendance to all class sessions is mandatory. Students more than 15 minutes late to class will not be admitted into class.

Last Day of Class

Lifeguard candidates are given lifeguarding based scenarios to test the candidates’ ability to effectively make decisions in emergency care, and water rescues. Candidates are only given 1 opportunity to successfully pass these tests, failure to successfully complete these exams will result in the candidate being required to re-take lifeguard training.

No refunds or exceptions will be given for candidates who fail the final skill scenarios, are late to class sessions, or no-show to any class session.

Course length is 30 hours.

Bring these items to all class sessions -

  •  
    • 3 beach towels
    • Photo ID (Driver's License/Permit/Passport) for age verification
    • Sack Lunch
    • 3-4 snacks
    • A pair of goggles (for the 300 yard swim ONLY)
    • A swim suit (no string Bikinis or Speedos)
    • A change of cloths (comfortable clothing sweatshirt/sweatpants)
    • Spiral Notebook
    • Pen or Pencil
    • Yellow or Orange Highlighter

 Prerequisites

  •  
    • Minimum age of 15.
    • Swim 300 yards continuously.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 13 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

 

Learning Objectives 

  •  
    • Learn how to identify behaviors of a swimmer, distressed swimmer and an active or passive drowning victim.
    • Understand the values of behaving in a professional manner.nderstand the components of an emergency action plan and how to activate it.
    • Understand the general procedures for an emergency occurring in the water or on land.
    • Demonstrate how to perform equipment-based rescues.
    • Learn how to provide first aid and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies.
    • Learn how to recognize and care for possible head, neck or back injuries.

Certification Requirement

1.   Attend all classes (Mandatory For Certification)

2.    Demonstrate high skill competency and pass all required skills and activities.                                      

3.   Complete all homework assignments, classwork, quizzes etc.

4.    Demonstrate high skill competency and pass all the final skill scenarios.

5.    Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions in all of the final written exams.

Certificate Issued and Validity Period

♦ Lifeguarding/First Aid: 2 years

♦ CPR/AED for Lifeguards: 2 years

 

Test results of exam(s) will be mailed to candidates one (1) week from the end of the course. Certificates will only be issued to those who successfully pass the written exam(s) and final skill scenarios. Written exam re-takes will be scheduled on a one-on one basis.
