Safety in Numbers … "Single" in Piermont, "3-Feet" in New Jersey

Tonight we will present two distinguished guests, Piermont Police Officer Cyril Kerr and Assemblywoman L. Grace Spencer. Officer Kerr will briefly address safety concerns about bike riding through Piermont. Assemblywoman Spencer, our main speaker, will inform us about the "3-Feet-Between" law for which she is the prime sponsor. Ms. Spencer, an avid cyclist and bicycling advocate, organized and lead a 120-mile ride from Newark to Lambertville in August to draw attention to the law. It would require NJ motorists to leave a buffer of at least three feet when passing a bicycle traveling in the same direction. Violators would be subject to a $100 fine. The measure passed the Assembly overwhelmingly in June, and a companion measure is being sponsored in the Senate. Ms. Spencer states, "Increasingly, road rage and impatience have put more and more bikers in dangerous positions. Cyclists, whether on a pleasure ride or their daily commute, deserve some guarantee to their small part of the road." Be an informed cyclist. If you ride through Piermont, or on any roads in New Jersey.
