High School Holiday Tournament Preview

A look to the winter break contests.

While Ridgewood High School students observe their winter break until Jan. 3, 2010, all winter sports continue their seasons in the meantime. Detailed below is our look at the young seasons so far for some varsity teams.

Boys basketball

Following a close opening night defeat, the boys basketball team has been dealt some big losses. Still looking for its first win (0-3), the Maroons have lost to Don Bosco and St. Joseph's by a combined 36 points.

Despite being winless, James Albano is putting up big numbers. In three games, Albano's averaging 17.3 points per game. Albin Hoh is also contributing—putting up double-digit points in two games while averaging 13 points, as well.

The boys varsity team will play in the All Groups Basketball Tournament starting Dec. 28 at 5 p.m. in Pascack Hills.

Girls basketball

The season is still young for the Maroon girls. With only one game under their belts, the team is 0-1. Their lone loss came in a nail biter Dec. 18 verse Passaic Valley, losing 39 to 36.

Kelci Smesko led all scorers with 15 points. Meghan Roxas chimed in with seven points, as well.

The girls' season picks up again today with the Indian Hills tournament in Oakland at 3 p.m.

Wrestling

Thus far it's been an up-and-down campaign for Torre Watson's varsity team. Tough losses occurred at the Mahwah Tournament and against Don Bosco. That, coupled with convincing wins against Manchester and Garfield, leaves the club even and hopeful.

Like most clubs, the team's performance largely depends on its upperclassmen. In victories, seniors Andrew Gramaglia, Ryan Giovanetti, Sam Pietrantuono, Christian Rota, Bob Franklin, and Jimmy Uzzalino have performed well.

The team returns to action at the BCCA Holiday Tournament Dec. 28 and 29.

Ice Hockey

Five quick and strong wins have opened the regular season and left hockey team in excellent position for a big year. With wins against Wayne Hills, Paramus, St. Joseph's, Glen Rock and Bayonne, the club has excelled.

Led by Kevin Entwistle with seven goals and 10 points, and goalie Kasey Zegel, the Maroons have dominated competition, outscoring opponents 24 to 14.

Today, Ridgewood starts the Jefferson Tournament at Skylands Ice Arena in Stockholm at 12:30 p.m.
