Maroons Seek Upset of NH on Sunday

Ridgewood boys soccer moves on, girls ousted

The Ridgewood boys soccer team will be looking for some revenge on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded Maroons  take on rival Northern Highlands, the fourth seed, in the Bergen County Tournament quarterfinals at Ramapo High School.

If Ridgewood takes the Highlanders to lower ground, they'll likely face top-seeded Ramapo in the semifinals.

Last time Ridgewood and Highlands met, the Maroons dropped a 3-0 decision in Allendale. Despite the score, most of the game was a 1-0 Highlanders lead before blasting in a couple of goals in the second half. It was closer than it looked and the Maroons are confident they can exact revenge.

In the opening round, the Maroons (9-1-1) defeated Pascack Valley, 1-0, with a little goal keeping by Pete Goodman, quality defense and the foot of Matt Steinberg. Steinberg kicked a shot by Pascack Valley keeper Chris Conti halfway through the second half.

Ridgewood prepped for the battle with Highlands with a 4-0 victory over Teaneck at home on Thursday. The Maroons led 3-0 at halftime and Mike Henni notched a pair of goals to highlight the Big North victory. Goodman and Nick Higgins combined on the shutout in goal.

Girls soccer

Ridgewood (7-4-3) might have been the higher seed in the Round of 16 battle against Mahwah, but the Maroons were playing at Mahwah since it was a neutral field.
The Lady Maroons, the eighth seed, dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to ninth-seeded Lady T-Birds in the dreaded penalty kicks. Ridgewood lost 4-3 in the penalty kicks.

The game was tied at one through regulation and two overtimes. Courtney Tarleton scored the lone regulation goal for Ridgewood that came in the second half.

Despite being ousted from the county tournament, Ridgewood rebounded in fine fashion on Wednesday with a 6-0 victory over Teaneck in Ridgewood. Darby Kiernan collected a pair of goals against Teaneck. Tarleton added a goal and two assists for the Lady Maroons. The goalie duo of Olivia Shaw and Charlotte Morley combined for nine saves in the shutout.

Football

Ridgewood continues to get better, but the Maroons also continue to lose to quality opponents.

Ridgewood played football powerhouse Wayne Hills well on the road on Friday, but dropped a 28-21 decision in the Big North game.

The loss dropped Ridgewood to 1-4 on the season. The Maroons need to win their next three games to be eligible for the state playoffs. Ridgewood takes on Hackensack next Friday.

Peter Reuter scored on a four-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to trim the Patriots lead to seven, 28-21, but the Maroons could not get the tying touchdown. In addition to the Reuter touchdown, Jason Canella and Blake Feagles rumbled for scores. The Feagles' touchdown was 81 yards and came to start the third quarter.

Cross Country

The Ridgewood boys and girls cross country teams might not have put the top runner on the standings of the Big North Freedom division race on Friday at Garrett Mountain in Woodland Park. But both teams took home the team titles.

The Ridgewood boys outscored Hackensack, 26-37 and the Ridgewood girls outscored Paramus, outscoring 31-54, for the Freedom girls title.
Hackensack senior John Pujols outran Ridgewood junior Nick Salamone for first place by a little more than 11 seconds, 16:28.60 to 16:39.70. Just after Salamone was junior Will Ades with a time of 16:48.24. Senior Travis Spicer and Mark French came in fifth and seventh place respectively. Junior Storm Dublirer and senior Ben Fishbein took home ninth and 11th places respectively.

Ridgewood girls might not have won the Big North Freedom division race that went to Hackensack senior Oni Obelle, but the Lady Maroons took home the Freedom division title.

Six of the Ridgewood runners finished in the top 10, led by seniors Hanako Shigenobu and Caroline Davidson with times of 21:15.11 and 21:15.37 for fourth and fifth place respectively. Sophomores Emily Fishbein and Laura Weisberger placed sixth and seventh place respectively. Junior Lesley Jones and senior Victoria Pan came in ninth and 10th places respectively. Junior Francesca Felder came in 12th place.

Girls volleyball

Ridgewood might be struggling this season, but they have had played much better of late, including the takedown of stalwarts Fair Lawn, 26-24, 25-18, on Tuesday at home.
The Maroons were 4-10 as of late this week. Against the Cutters senior Stephanie Rudd led the way with 10 kills and seven assists. Senior Mia Duarte added five kills to the Ridgewood Big North victory.

Girls gymnastics

Ridgewood (8-1) stayed almost perfect in dual meets as the Lady Maroons defeated Butler, 96.65 to 90.92 on Thursday on the road. Natasha Brodsky led the way for Ridgewood by taking the vault (8.9) and the floor exercise (8.6). Lady Maroons' Emily Steen finished second in the uneven bars (8.65) and third in the floor exercise (8.2).
