Panthers Clawing Their Way Toward Top League Positions This Spring

Teams finding success as season gets into full gear

What's the one thing that has been stopping Glen Rock this spring?

Rain.

Despite bothersome weather, many of Glen Rock's teams are holding onto great records and look poised for county and state tournament runs.

Girls Lacrosse (3-1)

An odd schedule with multiple days off between games and a rainout on opening day left the girls lacrosse team at a disadvantage early this season.

They went into their contest last week with Vernon having only played 1 game, while Vernon had played 7.  The result was a tough start and an eventual 12-6 loss.

After being grounded by their first loss of the season, the Lady Panthers reeled off a big win 16-4 against Paramus on Saturday.

Next for the team was Northern Highlands, one of the better programs in North Jersey. Glen Rock got their offense going once again with a 14-11 win.

The team, starting to hit their stride, will face tests in the coming weeks. Huge Bergen County games against Ramapo, Ridgewood and Immaculate Heart Academy are on the horizon.

Boys Lacrosse (5-1)

A 5-0 start to the season had the team riding high, but a one goal loss to Northern Highlands gave the team their first loss of the year.

On Wednesday, the team played a stellar defensive game in a 6-1 victory over Jefferson.

Facing some injuries, the squad then battled hard against Northern Highlands, but took their first loss.

This Monday the Panthers look to make a big statement in the county with a match  against Bergen Catholic.

Baseball (7-2-1)

The baseball team continued to dominate in NJIC Colonial Division play, defeating Rutherford (6-2) Lodi (14-4) and then Saddle Brook (14-4).

Though they dropped a 5-2 game against River Dell on Saturday, they have been producing runs in bunches, which should bode well come tournament time.

Showing some pop from the leadoff position, Brett Lederer hit a leadoff home run against Saddle Brook.

Dillon White has been swinging the bat well, as he has recovered from an ankle season at the end of football season that forced him to miss all of the winter season.

In action yesterday, Glen Rock defeated Pascack Hills in a big NJIC Colonial Division game 9-4. With that win, the Panthers have climbed into first place in their division.

Softball (6-1)

The Lady Panthers are a force to be reckoned with this season, that’s for certain after two crucial NJIC wins against Rutherford (5-4) and Pascack Hills (3-1).

Taylor Feuss has been great from the circle and have been on fire from the plate.

Last weekend, in the Junkyard Jamboree tournament, Eric Machi hit a double and a triple in the first game, a 5-2 win over Newton. Then Julia Machi ripped a triple of her own in a 6-0 defeat to Morris Knolls.

With the Machi twins set on outdoing each other, that means only one thing; opposing pitchers better be ready.

With their wins over Pascack Hills and Rutherford, the team is in the driver’s seat for the Colonial Division title and should see a good seed for the county tournament as well.

Boys Tennis (2-2)

The tennis team evened up their record with a 5-0 win over Park Ridge.

Alvaro Aldaz won his first singles match 6-0, 6-0 as the Panthers cruised to an easy victory.

Golf (5-4)

On the links, the golf team split a match with Hawthorne and Garfield.  The Panthers defeated Garfield 29-7, but fell to Hawthorne 21-15.

We’ll be back with another update next week, as we get closer to county tournament time
