Roxas: Ridgewood's Sharpshooter

Meghan Roxas shot the windows up, notching 28 points on 4-4 shooting from the outside this past week.

By the final whistle, Meghan Roxas was exhausted after Saturday night's Bergen County Tournament battle with top-seeded Immaculate Heart Academy. The junior shooting guard was still feeling the effects of a flu that kept her out of school on Friday and limited her minutes on Saturday.

Roxas was limited that night against the top-ranked Blue Eagles as the 16th-seeded Ridgewood fell 53-43 in the second round of the county tourney at Paramus Catholic.

"I woke up and felt really crappy," said Roxas who was slowed down to eight points against the Blue Eagles, but helped get Ridgewood to that point on Saturday against the top seed after leading the Maroons to a 57-39 victory over Mahwah in the Bergen County Tournament first round.

Against the T-Birds on Jan. 29, the junior filled up the box score from points to assists to rebounds and steals registering 28 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals."I just found myself having a lot of open looks and they were setting a lot picks for me," said Roxas after the game against IHA.

Ridgewood head coach Meaghan Palmer could not say more about Roxas including her shooting ability. "I was talking to the IHA coach and I would say that Megan is the best shooter in the county," said Palmer. "She is definitely a first team all-county player."

The Ridgewood head coach, who won a national championship as a player at Notre Dame, said that Roxas is a pure basketball kid. Along with her role at Ridgewood, the junior plays for an AAU team, All-New Jersey Elite, based in South Jersey and Roxas credits her father, Arnold, for driving her all over the state and outside the state for games.

"She really understands the game and gets the rest of the team involved," said Palmer about the unselfish Roxas. "She's humble and an awesome kid."

Last season, Roxas was more of a point guard, but this season with Lauren Beausoleil on the team, she has moved to her best spot as a shooting guard.

And that is her mark, shooting the basketball on the perimeter including beyond the three-point arc. In the win over Mahwah, Roxas hit 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point line.

While shooting is the best aspect of her game, Roxas knows she still needs work and she intends to do just that the remainder of the season, along with finishing stronger on the drive.

The point total against Mahwah was one short of her season high that came on Jan. 18 at home against Paramus with 29 points. Despite her high school ability, that is one area that she wants to get better in the future.

Palmer credited Roxas and her team from coming back despite starting down 12-0 against IHA's suffocating defense.

For Ridgewood it was an improvement against IHA who they lost 54-23 only a couple of weeks ago in a regular season game.

With the county tournament pushed to the side, the Maroons are looking to the state tournament, the Group 4 North 1 state section where she is optimistic that team can win a sectional title.

"It was disappointing last season," said Roxas of losing to Montclair in the second round. "I think the section is wide open and we could do well," said Roxas who looking forward to bring home a state title for Ridgewood.
