VIDEO: Inside "The Captain" With Sportswriter Ian O'Connor

Columnist Ian O'Connor was at Bookends to promote his new book, and sat down with Patch for an interview.

Beloved Yankee captain Derek Jeter has been called by many "the perfect superstar," a sure-fire Hall of Famer and five-time World Series winner who has escaped the scandal that's befallen many.

Yet Jeter is also very private man and one who isn't perfect after all, according to ESPN NY sportswriter Ian O'Connor. O'Connor, who's covered the Yankees for 16 years as a columnist, was at Bookends Thursday night signing copies of his new book The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter, an unauthorized biography of the aging shortstop compiled after over 200 interviews.

Patch sat down with O'Connor for a three-part interview, where the North Jersey native reveals interesting aspects of Jeter's childhood, the unlikely story on how he became a Yankee and where O'Connor believes Jeter's fallen short as the Yankee captain.

Check back for parts two and three on Sunday and Monday and hear the sportswriter's thoughts on Jeter's stormy relationship with Alex Rodriguez, the unsettling contract negotiations in the recent off-season, Jeter's decline in production, how the Yankees will fare this year and much, much more. If you are a Yankee fan, be sure to come back to see the full interview over the next two days.

As always, more signed copies of the book are available at for those who wish to buy one.
